About the Szekszárd wine area The Celtics started growing grapes for wine production in the southernmost areas of Hungary more than 2000 years ago. Over the centuries, many noteworthy individuals have enjoyed the unique Kadarka wine, including Pope Pius, Schubert, Ferenc Liszt. The poet Mihály Babits, himself a Szekszárd native, penned several poems expressing his appreciation for the nectar of these beautiful hills. János Garay, another local poet, wrote about the Szekszárd Bull's Blood wine (bikavér) in his poem "Szegzárdi bordal" (Szegzárd wine song). The environment for wine production in the Szekszárd area is second to none: a region surrounded by hills, with rich yellow soil and a submediterranean climate. This, combined with the expertise of Szekszárd winemakers attained through generations of practicing their craft, results in the impressively fine wines of Szekszárd. In the past few years, the producers of the local Szekszárd spirits have come to rival local wineries in their expertise and popularity, becoming well known for the fine and fragrant "hungaricum" that satisfies the most refined taste buds.
